Please Help! Red Scarf Project 2013!

Please Help!

Once again, OPYF and The Fiber Factory, this holiday season is supporting an organization called the Orphan Foundation of America The Red Scarf Project http://www.fc2success.org/programs/red-scarf-project-and-book-club/ - Foster Care for Success Program.  Children that go through the foster care system often face challenges getting the education they need to lead happy and productive lives. The Foster Care for Success program gives scholarships to further the education of kids who would not have the money to continue their education.  In 2005 the Foster Care for Success program began sending the kids that were attending college or vocational schools a Valentine's Day care package.  These kids often don't have family or parents who would send care packages to them.  So, to show that someone cares - packages are sent with treats including a red hand knitted or crocheted scarf.  You will find all the information about how to help here - Please Help! Red Scarves for Charity  OPYF will be a collection center for OPYF knitters and friends.  Mail your scarves to me by December 10th at:

One Planet Yarn and Fiber
8314 E. Monterosa St.

Contest rules-

It has been a while since I have run a contest, so here are the details-we need help with the Red Scarf Project. To enter the contest, go to the blog and put your name in as a participant, then, join the One Planet Knitters Ravelry forum for the Red Scarf Project and share your works in progress and finished scarves. The guidelines for the scarves are on my Ravelry link. I have a stash of yarns, magazines, books and other surprises to give away to anyone that participates and sends me a scarf. If you want to just encourage us along, I have a surprise prize for that too. I will slowly get a chance to post some of the swag as we move along on the Ravelry page. I need to start my scarf too! Finished scarves due here by December 10, 2013. That is when the contest ends too. Good Luck and thanks for your help.

RED SCARF PROJECT GUIDELINES:

Size: approximately 60” long and 5” to 8” wide. Scarves should be long enough to be wrapped around the neck, with tails long enough to be tied in the front.

Style: Think unisex collegiate. Fringes are optional. Your scarf should drape, tie easily and be soft.

Color: Red! However, this could mean burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, or multicolor hues including red.

Finished & tagged: Yarn ends should be securely sewn in. For a personal touch, attach a tag saying “Handmade for You” with your first name, city, and group affiliation, if any. Donors have also included washing instructions, messages of encouragement, gift cards, and more.

Thank you for your help!

Something You Might Like-Drive To Kentucky

On July 2nd my daughter and I hopped in the car and drove from Silver Spring, Maryland to Lexington, Kentucky.  My daughter has a friend from high school that lives there with her parents.

We met for dinner and the BBQ was quite yummy along with some grape and orange Nehi!

My daughter's friend's parents have several cats, as they live on a 100 year old horse farm.  2 of the cats were indoor cats.  This one decided I was the cat's meow and wouldn't leave my bedroom!

The guard dog.

The girls dressed up to head out on the town.  I stayed in and knitted, of course, with the cat.

3 of the horses snagging breakfast.

The following morning, July 3rd, we were off in the car to explore a little of Kentucky.

First stop?  The oldest, continuously running bourbon distiller in the country- Woodford Reserve.  The tour was fantastic and there were some yummy treats at the end of the tour.

My daughter noticed right away that the iPad for the distiller was not locked.  She works for Apple.  She immediately found a manager and showed them what he needed to do to lock the device, but she won't help me with my computer, go figure.

First stop was the lobby, history of bourbon, some info on production, did somebody say gift shop?

My daughter's friend's dad said that he didn't think that anyone in Kentucky did fiber arts.  First thing as I came out of the ladies room was this sign and a wonder weaving from a local artist.

On to the tour!

I just wanted to share all the beauty of the process of making bourbon in the beauty of these wonderful old buildings.

Thank goodness we only stopped at one distiller!  There is a Bourbon Trail in Kentucky and many places to tour.

Next stop?  The birthplace of Abraham Lincoln.

We arrived and found this monument at the top of a hill.  I was so disappointed to think that the cabin was gone and that this stood in it's place.

Then we climbed the stairs, went around to the back of the building and found this-

It was an incredible moment.  We left the monument and went down the hill to find out the reason Abe's father bought this land.  A natural spring.

It was now time to find lunch.  We found this place a couple of miles off the Interstate using Yelp.  We had Barbeque, of course and then dessert.

Deep fried banana moon pie with vanilla ice cream.  Wow!

Then we headed off to Tennessee.

Nap time.

Karen
