Knitting Goodies.....and NOT just for the Holidays!

If you haven't had the chance to order the Cedar Leaf Shawlette kit designed by the very talented Alana Dakos of Never Not Knitting, it is not too late! This kit is so stunning and unusual, that we just can't keep it in stock! Don't worry, there is always another yarn shipment from Hand Maiden on its way to our store. The Cedar Leaf Shawlette is a lovely crescent shaped little shawl that drapes beautifully around the shoulders and looks absolutely lovely wrapped around the neck as a scarf. The curved shape of the shawl is created using short rows and the leafy border is knit on once the body of the shawl is completed. The kit was designed using Hand Maiden's luxurious Lady Godiva yarn which is 50% wool and 50% silk in the Cedar colourway. We are always happy to substitute another colourway we have in stock or special order your favourite colour from Hand Maiden. Just email us and we're happy to help.
This gorgeous kit was such a big hit with our customers that we decided top create a second version in Fleece Artist Woolie Silk, another lovely handpainted yarn spun in 65% wool and 35% silk. The Cedar Leaf Shawlette Woolie Silk kit is now available in a variety of colours.

We also wanted to show you a really fashion forward line of patterns we are now carrying in pdf download format designed by Vladimira Cmorej of Vadis Designs. Vladimira has her master's Degree in Art Teaching and has worked as a fabric designer, faux finisher, and decorative painter. She has been knitting her whole life and currently self publishes and designs patterns for yarn companies. We are sure you will agree with that her designs are not only very chic, but also very sexy!
Here are just a couple of our favorites. The Open Shoulder Pullover is a very close fitting twisted rib pullover with 3/4 sleeves designed in worsted weight yarn.

The Two Button Cardigan is a 3/4 sleeve cardigan with garter stitch hems and an asymmetric closure designed for heavy worsted or chunky weight yarn.

Happy Shopping!!!

Twitter, Blogger & Ravelry Surprises

We probably don't post often enough on this blog, especially with our own knitting projects! I am working on 3 different things right now, but I forget to take photos...... I will try to take some soon. I also need to get out my spinning wheel, especially with this gorgeous new fiber we have just received from Funky Carolina. She sent us some unique goodies this time - merino/bamboo/silk blend, alpaca/merino/silk blend, merino & silk and fiber batts. Yum yum. I will put a through photos here throughout my post as I upload the new photos onto the One Planet Yarn and Fiber site.

Yarn and fiber photography can be more challenging then it looks. It certainly is time consuming, but there is nothing like yarn photos. If you had told me ten years ago that I would get all excited by the photos of the colors and textures of yarn, I would have not believed you. I think people are either color or pattern people and I am definitely a color person! I love buying paint for my watercolor painting as well.

I wanted to let our readers know that we will be having some new special contests and one day coupons and other fun things on Twitter, our Ravelry group and here. So be sure to keep watching for these special offers. Today, on Friday, 10/2/09, I just posted on Twitter a 20% off coupon (Twitter20) that can be used anytime until 10/3/09 at midnight......It takes 20% off anything and everything on our site with no minimum or maximum. The only excluded items are LaLana kits and yarns. Please don’t order those with this coupon as we can’t honor that sorry!

I hope some of you see this and buy something fun for yourself that you might not otherwise buy. The coupon also works towards on sale and close out items so that is a great offer.

Keep watching this space. Follow us at Twitter and on Ravelry. Follow our blog and sign up for our mailing list. We have some fun things for you over the next month or two in honor of our third anniversary!

One Planet Wecomes "Never Not Knitting"

We are so excited to announce the addition of a new collection of download patterns to our selection of patterns created by indie knitwear designers. The talented Alana Dakos is a hopelessly obsessed knitter, blogger and podcaster living in Sunny California. She lives with her very supportive husband and 3 year old daughter who constantly inspires her to design new little things. Most all of the Never Not Knitting designs are offered in a wide variety of sizes and are garments that are worked all in one piece with minimal finishing work. To see more designs visit Alana's knitting blog. Be sure to also check out the NeverNotKnitting podcast available on iTunes to hear about Alana's latest knitting adventures!

Here are a few of Alana's gorgeous patterns to whet your appetite. The first one is called Amelie and it features a fun, easy to memorize sock pattern that you’ll be sure to enjoy knitting. One of the awesome things about this pattern is that it has been written to accommodate three different methods of sock knitting. You can knit up your Amelie socks using double pointed needles, 2 circular needles, or one circular needle (magic loop).

Alana loves to design patterns for children and her adorable daughter is a perfect model. This pattern is called Sheepish and it makes a wonderful heirloom quality garment for either a boy or girl. The pattern offers simple sweater construction with just a little taste of intarsia work. It is worked in one piece from the bottom up with almost no seaming! Directions are provided for three sizes, from 6 months to 2 years.

This next pattern is called Very Cherry and although Alana designed it in a cotton yarn, it would be absolutely adorable knit up in bamboo or in one of our cashmere, silk/wool blend or alpaca yarns for fall/winter and worn by pairing the dress over leggings and a long sleeved top.

Last, but not least is Chloe. Chloe is super quick to knit and super fun to wear! This sweater is worked in one piece from the top down with no seaming required. It will only take you a weekend to whip one up and is a great project for using up worsted weight yarn scraps.

Be sure to check out all of the Never Not Knitting patterns at One Planet Yarn and Fiber. While you're shopping be sure to check out our summer sale. We have some incredible deals that won't last long!

The Kowloon Cardigan

The Kowloon Cardigan - Knit Kit in HandMaiden Flaxen, designed by Connie Chang-Chinchio

We are so very excited to release another gorgeous Knit Kit designed by the very talented Connie Chang-Chinchio. We are so lucky at One Planet Yarn and Fiber to have Connie working with us! Watch for more projects from Connie in the fall.

The Kowloon Cardigan is a gorgeous lacy cardigan in HandMaiden's Flaxen yarn. Flaxen is a luxurious blend of silk and linen, makes a light, summery cardigan. Linen and silk take up the dye differently, leading to a delightful tweedy look while feeling cool next to the skin. Mirrored panels of lace impart a pleasing symmetry which is set off by a wide, shallow shawl neck collar and bands closed by buttons and button loops.

Natural, wooden buttons are chosen to complement the richness of the ivory colorway as shown, but a more polished look can be had with mother-of-pearl buttons. Kowloon, an area of Hong Kong, is the birthplace of the designer Connie Chang Chinchio's mother and literally translated means "nine dragons."

The complete knit kit includes the pattern download and 4 skeins of Flaxen in your choice of color to make size XS-S. Please see the kit listing for more information on the sizing. The Kowloon Cardigan Kit is available in sizes XS - 3X! We are committed to providing knit kits and patterns to women of all sizes!

. Important - Please note this knit kit is not included in the summer kit sale. The yarn is already discounted because you are buying the yarn and the pattern. Sorry!

Varese Hoodie by Connie Chang-Chinchio

We have an adorable new Knit Kit called the Varese Hoodie which was designed by Connie Chang-Chinchio. These Varese kits have been doing really well and people are knitting the Varese in various colors of Woolie Silk. Fleece Artist's beautiful wool and silk blend, Woolie Silk, adds visual depth and interest to a classic hoodie with set in sleeves. Lace trims the front pockets, hood and sleeve cuffs, adding a bit of feminine flair to a sporty shape. Gentle princess seam shaping and a hemmed edge gives it the final polish.

The sweater pattern is written for 7 different sizes from XS - 2X, consistent with One Planet's mission of having extended sizes including XS and plus sizes for as many of our knit kits as we can.

Connie Chang-Chinchio is an accomplished designer and you may have seen her patterns in Interweave Knits, Knitscene and other places! She has created several of our most popular designs including the Garland Shell in Black Pearl Yarns Cashmere and the Lacy Rib Turtle and Hexagon Bag in Lanas Puras Melosa. All of her patterns are available as Knit Kits at One Planet Yarn and Fiber.

Caricia by Anne Hanson

Anne Hanson of Knitspot.com has done it again. Anne designed the incredibly gorgeous Caricia shawl with HandMaiden's Swiss Cashmere and Silk. Knitting with this yarn is heavenly! It is so soft and the silk gives it a lovely sheen. The colorway used for the pattern is bronze but people have also bought the knit kit in other colors....

The Caricia (it's Spanish for caress) shawl is simply luxurious, knit in HandMaiden's exquisite swiss mountain cashmere and silk yarn. The kit comes in 3 sizes and includes the pattern download.

Sweater Knit Kits designed by Debbie O'Neill

We have two new sweater knit kits from Debbie O'Neill to blog about...

The Piuma Griga Cashmere Tee and the Myrtille Cardigan are designs by Debbie O'Neill of Nutty Creations. Debbie is a very talented designer. Her patterns are very well-written and easy to follow. She has created other patterns for One Planet Yarn and Fiber including the very popular Dayflower Cardigan, the Arrowhead Lace Cardigan and the Gulf Cardigan. We have had great feedback from our customers regarding all of Debbie's designs, and all of them are available as knit kits at One Planet Yarn and Fiber. Debbie is planning a few more designs for spring including a lace shawl in HandMaiden sea silk and other surprises for you in other various Fleece Artist/HandMaiden yarns.

All of Debbie's patterns and the knit kits come in extended sizes including XS and plus sizes in keeping with One Planet's goal of having as many kits and patterns as possible in this wide range of sizes to fit all women.

Piuma Griga Cashmere Tee

Here are some photos of the Piuma Griga cashmere tee and the Myrtille Cardigan. You can read more about them on their product listings on our site-just click on the pattern name.. The yarn used for both of these is very special. The Piuma Grigia pattern is knit in Black Pearl Yarns pure DK cashmere, one of our best selling yarns. The Myrtille Cardigan is knit with the very special Fleece Artist Lanica - an unusual single ply 100% organic yarn, dyed with plant based dyes. Plant dyed yarns are very special in that the colors are unusual. The color used for Myrtille is Blueberry and some have asked us why it is not blue! The actual blueberry plant, the leaves were used to dye this color and they are a beautiful shade of soft olive green.

Myrtille Cardigan

We have two other new knit kits which we will blog about separately! These deserved their own blog post.

The Somerset Cardigan Kit

We have a GORGEOUS new sweater kit, the Somerset Cardigan, designed by Melissa Wehrle of Neoknits. Melissa is a very talented designer as many of you know and she is the Creative Director for One Planet Yarn and Fiber. This beautiful sweater is knit in Black Pearl Yarns cashmere in the Chai Tea color way. You can purchase the kit in any color of cashmere we carry or we can help you find an alternative yarn if you so desire. Although, there is nothing like cashmere!!

The Somerset Cardigan is a textured shawl collar cardigan reminiscent of days gone by without sacrificing a modern fit. A simple knit/purl texture stitch adds interest to the body and cap sleeves. The deep ribbed shawl collar is worked separately and attached to the body. Leather buttons add a final vintage touch, but for a more modern look try glass, metal or wood.

The knit kit includes 5 skeins of Black Pearl DK Cashmere, in Chai Tea for sizes XS, S and M (see below for finished bust and length measurements)and the pattern. The entire kit costs less then buying the pattern and yarn separately.
