Off the Beaten Path- Getting to Spain

Did I tell you?  I won a trip to Spain.  Really, I did!  We just had to find a way to get there.  I gathered up many frequent flier points and arranged for my husband and myself to fly business class on British Airways.  They fly non stop from Phoenix to London.  From there we would catch a flight to Madrid.

Welcome to London!  This is before we knew how big Heathrow airport really is and having to  sprint through the airport to make our connection!

US planes do not have a coat hook on the back of the seat in front of you.

Madrid!

Gorgeous sunset as we were landing.
Madrid's Barajas Airport is considered to be one of the most beautiful airports in the world.

Our first day in Madrid we spent just wandering the old city and getting out bearings.  We took soooo many pictures!  We've never been to Europe before.

The symbol of Madrid, a bear eating the fruit of the Madrona tree.

All roads in Spain start here, at kilometer zero.

Napoleon was defeated here!

Dexter in Spainish, anyone?

I can just picture the crowds here in the summer.  I'm glad we were there in January!

Dali anyone?

This is the cathedral next to the royal palace in Madrid.
Heads up!  There are many pictures below.  Spain is full of wonderful churches and it is so hard to not show the pictures to you!

Pope John Paul dedicated this cathedral.

The Palace.  We just took some pictures and did not go in the first day.

Time to walk again.
Mercado San Miguel for lunch!

Time to walk back to our hotel.  There were so many beautiful door knockers.  Remember, many of these homes were built decades to centuries before electricity.  They are quite large and need heavy knockers to be heard inside the houses.

Happy Trails!
