Announcing The OPYF June KAL - Shipwreck Shawl

Shipwreck Shawl by Bethany Kok

I know, his is a big project, but it is so beautiful.  I saw the finished pattern at my LYS Tempe Yarn.  It was beautiful.  One of the employee's has MS and knitted it as a raffle prize to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.  I duly purchased a ticket, and lost.

This pattern was created by Bethany Kok in 2009.  She is a very talented young designer.  Bethany has a blog here at knittingharpy and welcomes you to follow her.

So now a I have Shipwreck envy.  I couldn't stand it.  And then a friend of mine came over and told me she was going to make this shawl and picked out an OPYF yarn for it.  What a great time to start this project!   My friend is highly experienced knitter who knows how to knit lace.  I, am an awful lace knitter.  "Ah ha," I said.  This will be the next KAL!

The other good news about this pattern is that it is a FREE download from knitty.com.  Here is the link to the Shipwreck Shawl pattern.

I have decided to use the new yarn from Handmaiden Fine Yarns called Marrakesh.  The color I chose to use is named Spruce.

Now, knowing how often I have trouble with lace, I am giving until the end of the year to finish this project.  That will give me some time to throw in some other KALs along the way.

Regards,
Karen

Oh, this is a great pattern! I did this last year as a Christmas gift for my mom. It was my first "real" lace project. Don't worry: once you get started, it's much easier than it looks.

Hi All,
I have made it to the 7th row of the second pattern part. I probably need to sew in a lifeline in case I need to frog instead of tink. This is what my friend who is knitting along with me said I should do. I have put it aside for a few days as this trip back east has left me with a lower concentration level. I'll work on it again while flying home tomorrow.
